Peter Hartwell
Senior Researcher, Information and Quantum Systems
HP Laboratories, Hewlett-Packard Company

Peter G. Hartwell is a senior researcher for Information and Quantum Systems at HP Laboratories, where he leads the micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) team. With extensive experience in commercializing silicon MEMS products, Hartwell has worked on an abundance of advanced sensors, actuators and MEMS testing techniques.
In addition to designing and fabricating devices, Hartwell leverages his passion for testing by innovating new structures and unique sets of tools to test creations at HP Labs.

Hartwell first joined HP Labs in 1999 to work on the atomic resolution storage (ARS), which sought to miniaturize a CD-RW like storage system on a single silicon chip creating a new type of non-volatile, solid state storage. His contribution led to the success of the Micromover and the development of ARS.

Previously, Hartwell worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and did brief post doctoral work at HP Labs before fully joining the staff in 2000.

Hartwell holds a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University.
